Writing A Magical Realism Non-Fiction Book
When I began writing my second book, I planned to continue in the realm of non-fiction and drafted an entire project based on using spirituality to recover from trauma. The fundamental question for the book: How do I help people understand the knowledge and gifts they are born with, the soul contract we sign before each life, and the path to actualization accessible through spirituality?
This book took direct aim at how organized religion – whether Christianity, Judaism, Islam, or whatever –prevents us from understanding the direct relationship we have with God from the moment our soul enters the body. Then, I realized that teaching people about spirituality through a non-fiction book would create a backlash from closed-minded religious people. So, I began all over.
However, my fundamental question remained. Through trial and error, I learned that the best method to explain these principles was through a fictional story. And that’s how I discovered magical realism.
This genre presents a realistic worldview while incorporating magical elements or settings. I created a character named Serena, a wood nymph who lived in the mountains of Colorado. Nymphs come from Greek mythology and are not overly defined. I was able to equip Serena with all the knowledge of the different elements and modalities of spirituality that I wanted people to understand, including the medicine wheel, spirit guides, spirit animals, soul contracts, shielding, tarot cards, journeying, past lives, soul families, and the Akashic Records.
Next, I created Caroline Howard, a girl anyone could relate to. She came from a middle-class family that lived in a suburb of Denver, an entirely realistic setting. She loved music and the sounds of birds. I wove Caroline’s tragic story together with Serena’s knowledge and explained how a spiritual modality could help with each difficulty Caroline encountered.
Whether you are a fan of magical realism or have never read a book in this genre before, pick up “When the Birds Stopped Signing” at Amazon or Barnes & Noble and enjoy this “stirring, often heart-wrenching story” (US Review of Books).
