Journey with the Moon
Journeying, a fundamental shamanic skill, is a process where the shaman guides individuals to the lower or upper worlds to connect with their spirit animals or helping spirits. The shaman's role is not just about creating sacred space, often using a smudge stick and invoking the different directions, but about transforming it into a place where our burdens are lightened as we are touched by the hand of spirit.
Recently, I had the privilege of introducing a new group to the art of journeying. It was a delightful experience, as I hadn’t practiced this skill for some time. What truly captivates me is the joy of witnessing the awe and wonder that lights up the faces of each person as they emerge from their spirit walk, feeling connected and part of a larger spiritual community.
Journeying begins by moving into a trance state. Drumming is an essential part of shifting out of ordinary time to journey. Every shaman has a process for leading a person to the lower or upper world. We raise the vibrational level, which is necessary to speak to spirit. You can feel a change in the air as I take each person to their unique meeting place.
I like to journey a few days after the new moon when the moon begins its waxing cycle. As a shaman, it’s essential to understand the powers that come with each phase of the moon. The new moon is an excellent time for manifestation, as many people who want to journey are looking for answers to questions or desire to create change in their lives.
While I prefer to guide people on a journey in person, I can also perform this ritual over a distance. However, I always advocate for the presence of someone who understands how to create sacred space. Like many others, this skill can be learned and should be integral to your spirituality growth plan. Treat yourself to a journey at the next new moon.
